Background
As of Spring 2018, Virulent Newcastle Disease (VND) has been confirmed in Southern California. VND is an often fatal infection that impacts birds and poultry. No human cases of Newcastle disease have ever occurred from eating poultry products. Properly cooked poultry products are safe to eat. In very rare instances people working directly with sick birds can become infected. Symptoms are usually very mild, and limited to conjunctivitis and/or influenza-like symptoms. Infection is easily prevented by using standard personal protective equipment.
Residents that own chickens and other birds in Jurupa Valley are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with the issue and take precautions. Please visit the links below for more detailed information.
