Commercial Waste & Recycling Overview

Commerical solid waste, recycling, and organics collection is administered by the City through a contractual agreement with Burrtec Waste and Waste Management.  Burrtec services a majority of the City, while Waste Management services a small area on the west side of the City.  To find out who your waste hauler is, click here and review the map which illustrates the service area for each hauler.   Commercial entites are required to have solid waste services with the hauler that services the area in which they are located.

Mandatory Commercial Recycling

Effective July 1, 2012, California State law AB 341 requires commercial enterprises which generate four cubic yards or more of solid waste weekly to participate in recycling programs.  This requirement also includes multi-family housing complexes of five units or more, regardless of the amount of solid waste generated each week. 

Both Burrtec and Waste Management provide commercial recycling services and usually serve as the most convenient and effective option for commercial entites to remain in compliance with State law.  Recycling services provided by Burrtec or Waste Management can help commercial entites divert the amount of material that goes into solid waste bins, which may help the commercial entity avoid the costs associated with such large solid waste containers.

Mandatory Commercial Organics Processing

Effective January 1, 2019, any commecial entity that generates four (4) or more cubic yards of solid waste per week must arrange for organics recycling.  Organics recycling (also commonly referred to as "food waste" recycling) reduces the amount of material going into landfills.  This helps the State's efforts to reduce landfill traffic and acheive diversion goals.
